This building was originally a Charity School in the 1770’s and because of the colour of the uniform worn by the children at the time, it was known as the “Blue Coat School”. It is now a public house appropriately named “The Blue Coat” situated on The Crofts, off Moorgate Road, town centre. Photo taken in 1964.

The Howard Street/Effingham Street corner of the old Town Hall complex was originally the Mechanics' Institute, now a shopping arcade.

High Street, town centre. The right part of the four-gabled facade building is the oldest surviving secular building in the town centre. Its timber frames dates from the 15th century with late 16th/early 17th century additions. The building has sadly been empty for many years.
